   J.W.E.d'A was an Austrian anatomist, professor, archaeologist, draughtsman, copper engraver, illustrator and art critic. He grew up in Vienna; since 1802 he lived in Altona, Hamburg, since 1809/10 in Tiefur near Weimar, Jena. He traveled to Italy, England, Spain, Russia 1793?; in Würzburg he became prof. of natural and art history in 1818, tenured in 1826. Furthermore since 1818 he was a member of the Academy of Scientists Leopoldina (Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina), since 1831 furthermore member of the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin (Preußische Akademie der Künste, Section Bildende Künste).
