Luise Rainer
(1910-2014), Actress and painter; centenarianSitter in 5 portraits
Born in Dusseldorf, Germany, actress Luise Rainer trained with Max Reinhardt. She appeared in Austro-German films before travelling to Hollywood in the mid 1930s where she was dubbed as the new Garbo. Rainer won two successive Academy Awards for The Great Ziegfeld (1936) and The Good Earth (1937). She moved to London with her second husband and had her first one-man exhibition of paintings at Patrick Seale Gallery in 1978.
