Edward Bond

Playwright and director. Bond's second play Saved was highly controversial when it was first staged at the Royal Court Theatre in 1965 due to his illustration of the moral deprivation of contemporary life. His plays covered a variety of genres; Early Morning (1968) is a farce set in a cannibalistic heaven, The Pope's Wedding (1971) is a naturalistic play and The Sea (1976) is a comedy. Bond was the most celebrated dramatist to emerge from the left-wing writers who were encouraged through the Royal Court in the 1960s.
