American crime novelist and short-story writer known for her violent and disturbing psychological thrillers that have resulted in several film adaptations. Her first novel Strangers on a Train (1950) was made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1951 which helped advance her career and reputation. She is best known for her subtle depiction of the psychopath Tom Ripley in the series that includes The Talented Mr Ripley (1955).
