John Wyclif
(1324?-1384), Religious reformer and theologianJohn Wyclif (Wycliffe)
Sitter associated with 21 portraits
John Wyclif was a fourteenth-century scholar, translator and teacher, whose followers undertook the first complete translation of the Bible into English. Personal access to religious texts in the vernacular was central to the arguments for religious reform and as a result Wyclif was hailed in the sixteenth century as 'the morning star of the Reformation'. Many of Wyclif's teachings were considered heretical by the Catholic Church, and in 1428 the pope ordered that Wyclif's bones should be dug up, burned, and scattered in the river Swift.
