Edward Young

Young studied at Oxford, receiving a law fellowship at All Souls College in 1708. He was a friend of Thomas Tickell and George Bubb Dodington (Baron Melcombe), and a member of Joseph Addison's literary circle. He wrote Busiris, and the Revenge, produced at Drury Lane, 1719-21, and published a series of satires, The Universal Passion, 1725. He was appointed chaplain to King George II, 1728. He married Lady Elizabeth Lee, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Lichfield, 1731. He is best known for The Complaint; or Night Thoughts on Life, Death, and Immortality, published 1742.
