Regency Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter in 16 portraits
The Italian singer Catalani came to England in 1806 after successfully performing in Italy, Portugal and France. For seven years she was the unrivalled prima donna in London. Among her famous roles was 'Susanna' in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, which she introduced to London in 1812. The critic Leigh Hunt called Catalani 'a Roman with the regular Italian antelope face'.
