Andrew Lang
(1844-1912), Poet, scholar and writerSitter in 13 portraits
Lang made his mark as a poet, publishing Ballads and Lyrics of Old France in 1872. Further volumes of verse followed. Lang's major contribution lay in the areas of anthropology and folklore. His most important work in this field, Myth, Ritual and Religion, appeared in 1887. He argued that all primitive peoples have essentially the same ideas, tales, customs and beliefs, and that these live on in the form of 'survivals' in the classical myths and traditions of the developed world. He later turned to Scottish history. In Pickle the Spy, or, The Incognito of Prince Charles (1897) he detailed Charles Stuart's life after the Jacobite rising of 1745, about which little was then known.
