Arthur Henderson
(1863-1935), Politician, leader of the Labour Party, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and iron moulderSitter associated with 15 portraits
Worked for an iron foundry from the age of twelve. In 1892 Henderson was elected to a post for the Iron Founders Union. He became an MP for the Labour Representation Committee (later the Labour Party) in 1900. In 1915 he was the first member of the Labour Party to become a member of the Cabinet, as President of the Board of Education. He was appointed to the Cabinet as Foreign Secretary in 1929. While in this post he presided over the world disarmament conference at Geneva that opened in 1932. His efforts to achieve disarmament at a time marked by rearmament in Europe and the Far East earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1934. He was leader of the Labour Party for three short terms between 1908 and 1931.
