Composer (as Peter Warlock) and writer on music (as Philip Heseltine); received little formal training in music, but was greatly influenced in his compositions by Frederick Delius and Bernard van Dieren. Regarded pre-eminently as a composer of songs, including works such as the Corpus Christi carol (1919) and the song cycle The Curlew (1922); also a pioneer in the revival of 16th and 17th century music. A fearless and outspoken critic, he was the founder and editor of a musical journal The Sackbut (1920-1); the author of Frederick Delius (1923) and co-author with Cecil Gray of Carlo Gesualdo, Musician and Murderer (1926).
