Writer and scholar; author of critical, political and historical works as well as plays, novels and short stories. Steiner held chairs of comparative literature at Geneva and Oxford and was a founding fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge. His books, translated into 12 languages, included The Death of Tragedy (1961), Language and Silence (1967), In Bluebeard's Castle (1971), Real Presences (1989) and Errata: An examined life (1998).
