Janet Suzman

Born in Johannesburg, Suzman moved to London in 1959, the experience of apartheid making her 'militantly liberal'. Recruited by the Royal Shakespeare Company she played leading roles including her acclaimed performance as Cleopatra in 1973, directed by her then-husband Trevor Nunn. Suzman's numerous television roles in the 1960s and 1970s included an adaptation of Arnold Bennett's Clayhanger (1976). Her directorial debut was a multiracial production of Othello at Johannesburg's Market Theatre in 1987.
