Dame Helen Mirren

Stage and screen actress; her distinguished career ranges from the Royal Shakespeare Company to Hollywood roles. Mirren's career began at the National Youth Theatre, later joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1968. Notable roles on the stage have included Lady Macbeth (1974), Cleopatra (1983) and Natalya Petrovna in A Month in the Country (1994). Her film work includes performances in Peter Greenaway's The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989), Robert Altman's Gosford Park (2001) and The Queen (2006), for which she won an Oscar. On television Mirren is best known for her role as policewoman Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect. She was made a Dame of the British Empire in 2003.
