Nutritional physiologist. His lifelong study of nutrition began by highlighting the nation's poor health in the 1920s and advocating linked food and agricultural policies. His ideas underwrote national food policy during the War; director-general of the Food and Agriculture Organization (1945-8), he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize (1949).
